Special dietary recommendations for freshwater fish in Stockholm

Because high levels of PFAS have been detected in fish from some lakes in Stockholm, the City has issued special dietary recommendations. For Lakes Magelungen and Drevviken, the public is advised not to eat self-caught fish at all.

The amounts of PFAS absorbed by eating fish from Stockholm's lakes do not cause immediate health problems, but these substances remain in the body for a long time. For this reason, it is important to limit – or avoid – regularly eating fish known to contain high levels of PFAS.

Not recommended at all

For Lakes Magelungen and Drevviken, the public is advised not to eat self-caught fish at all. Although PFAS levels in Lake Drevviken are lower than in Lake Magelungen, the Swedish Food Agency recommends taking into account that Drevviken is a popular fishing lake.

Less restrictive recommendations

For Lakes Brunnsviken, Ulvsundasjön, Riddarfjärden, Årstaviken, Görväln, Flaten, Trekanten, Fiskarfjärden and Sicklasjön, the recommendations are less restrictive. Children, adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and anyone planning to become pregnant should not eat fish from these lakes more than two to three times per year. Everyone else should not eat fish from these lakes more than once a week.

These special dietary recommendations do not mean that fishing in these lakes is prohibited.
